Welcome To Grade One News 2016-2017 Please check weekly for information January 16th, 2017
A big success with Grade 6 buddies who were helping our students to create 3D figures with different materials. They talked about the figures' faces, vertices and sides. We will continue to explore the 3D figures for the next couple of weeks.
We kindly ask the students bring smaller boxes to school this week for our class project (we are looking for smaller items the size of a toothpaste box). Thank you for your support

Learning GoalsReligion: We are learning: That the story of Moses teaches us that God keeps His promises. That the story of Moses shows us how God kept His promise and saved His people. The first six commandments of God so that we can understand the way God wants us to live. The last four commandments so that we can honour God by following all of His commandments.
Language:Comprehension Strategies identify a few reading comprehension strategies and use them before, during, and after reading to understand texts, initially with support and direction (e.g., activate prior knowledge by brainstorming about the cover, title page, or topic; describe how they visualize a character or scene in a text; ask questions about information or ideas presented in a text: I wonder if…?, What if…? Why did…?; identify important ideas in a text) Teacher prompt: “What do you think is the most important thing to remember so far about this text/topic? Why do you think it is important?” 2.1 write short texts using a few simple forms (e.g., a recount of personally significant experiences; a simple report on topics of interest to the writer and identified in non-fiction reading; “How to”books identifying the steps in a procedure such as “How to Make Applesauce”, including pictures, symbols, and words) 2.6 identify elements of their writing that need improvement, including content, organization, and style, using feedback from the teacher and peers Teacher prompts: “Does this writing make sense to you?” “Does it say what you wanted to say?”
Math:Number Sense and Numeration -Compose and decompose numbers up to 20 in a variety of ways, using concrete materials -Count forward by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s to 100- read and print in words whole numbers to ten, using meaningful contexts (e.g., storybooks, posters)
Geometry – identify and describe common two dimensional shapes (e.g., circles, triangles, rectangles, squares) and sort and classify them by their attributes (e.g., colour; size; texture; number of sides), using concrete materials and pictorial representations (e.g.,“I put all the triangles in one group. Some are long and skinny, and some are short and fat, but they all have three sides.”);– trace and identify the two-dimensional faces of three-dimensional figures, using concrete models (e.g.,“I can see squares on the cube.”)
This week we would like to highlight some of activities you may to wish to do During Reading.Purpose: For students to read stories at their level Beginning with the title, ask your child to begin reading. If he/she is having difficulty decoding a word, please guide them: Does the picture help you?Can you sound it out?Can you make a guess?Skip the word and continue reading. Can you guess what it could be? What would make sense? If your child makes a guess that is incorrect but fits within the context of the story - tell them it was a great guess and then tell them what the word is.
October 17th, 2016 Learning Goals for this month:Reading:-extend understanding of texts by connecting the ideas in them to their own knowledge and experience, to other familiar texts, and to the world around them - text to text (“That reminds me of another book because…”)text to self (“That reminds me of when I …”)text to world (“That reminds me of something I saw on the news…”) -predict the meaning of and solve unfamiliar words using different types of cues.Eagle Eye (Look at the picture for clues to figure out the word)Lips the Fish (Get your mouth ready for the first sounds) Writing:-begin to establish a personal voice in their writing by using pictures and words that convey their attitude or feeling towards the subject or audience (what is your favourite part and why).
This week we would like to highlight some of the questions you may to wish to ask before reading a book. What do you see on the cover? What do you think this story will be about? Can you find the author’s name? Can you find the illustrator’s name? What does the illustrator do?Can you find the title? Do you see any words you know in the title? Read the title for meDo you think this story will be fiction or non-fiction? How can you tell?Children are also encouraged to take a “picture walk” through the story. As your child looks at the pictures, he/she is encouraged to discuss what is happening in the pictures. Here are some questions you may wish to ask: Do you know what this is called (builds vocabulary that may be needed for the story)What does it look like this character is doing? Can you tell where this story is taking place? The purpose is to: Build/access prior knowledge Connecting to personal experience Develop vocabulary Making predictions
MathNumber Sense and Numeration: Represent, compare and order whole numbers to 30 using a variety of tools (connecting cubes, ten frames, base ten materials) and contexts (real-life experiences, number stories) Compose and decompose numbers up to 20 in a variety of ways, using concrete materials Patterning and Algebra Create a set in which the number of objects is greater than, less, or equal to the number of objects in a given set ScienceThe study of Earth and Space Systems in Grade 1 focuses on daily and seasonal changes. Students will observe changes that occur in cycles, including day and night and the four seasons. As well they will learn how these cycles affect different living things in our environment. In all their investigations, students will continually refine their ability to observe, using all five senses, and will attempt to describe their observations as accurately as possible. They will also investigate and compare the basic needs of humans and other living things, including the need for air, water, food, warmth, and space using a variety of methods and resources.

Another great week, I hope all of you enjoyed the Carp Fair, a beautiful weekend for outdoor fun!
Sight words we are learning in class, please practice at home. I see a at the on my are is it and you me like to play day can on we little because come here said he she or of off be
Learning Goals Religion:Learning about our families at home, school and church Arts: Visual Arts 1.Demonstrate an understanding a variety of art styles and techniques 2.Apply the creative process to produce a variety of 2 dimensional art works using different mediums to communicate feelings, ideas and understandings
In writing, your child is working on writing simple complete sentences. The criteria is: start your sentence with a capital, use spaces between words and end your sentence with a period. Learning correct spelling is a process where children are asked to write phonetically by recording the sounds of the letters they hear for unknown words. For example: I like apls. We are also reviewing the correct spelling of kindergarten high-frequency words. The goal is for students to write sentences independently using words they know and phonetic spelling for unknown words. You can encourage their development by being very positive and supportive in this process when they write for a meaningful purpose. For example, a note to the tooth fairy, a letter to a family member. Students have been introduced to new high frequency grade one words.
*Please remember to watch your child’s letter formation and pencil grip when they are writing at home. Always remember to form letters by starting at the top of the letter. Look for a page showing proper letter formation for all letters of the alphabet, going home in your child's mailbag. How can you help at home? Try a few of these activities: Have your child describe the pattern and tell what comes next.Sort laundry or grocery items into groups with your child (all socks, all shirts). Talk about how the items in each group are the same.Ask your child to sort cutlery when you set the table. Ask what is the same and what is different about the items (forks have tines, all pieces have same handles).Collect various shoes at home and put them into a pile. Ask your child to sort them (summer/winter; laces/Velcro; adult/child). Ask: “How did you decide what to put in each pile?”Go on a pattern hunt at home with your child. See how many things you can find that have patterns (sweaters, socks, rugs, dishes). Ask your child to describe the patterns.
This week: Tuesday Sept. 27 - Picture Day Thursday Sept.29 - First Pizza day

September 12, 2016 We had an exciting week in the grade one class. The children are settling into the routine. They have meet their grade 6 buddies and did a fun activity Friday. Thank you for the supplies that are coming in, it is greatly appreciated.
This year we are using an app called Seesaw to share with you what they have been working on in class. The children will be taking pictures of their work and putting an explanation of the task completed. Some of the children will do videos explaining their thinking as well. When you sign up you may only see your child's work, you will be able to "like" and" comment on the work". I am hoping that this will help keep you informed about what is going on in the classroom. All the items that are on the app have been approved by me before they are posted. A letter will be sent home this week with the information on how to join our class.
We will be starting a nightly reading program called "Snuggle Up and Read". The children will bring home a duotang with the instructions this week. Have fun reading and snuggling up!
This week:
Thursday Sept. 15 - Open house 6:30 - 8:00pm Hope you can come by to say hello.
September 6, 2016
Welcome back to another exciting school year. We have an interesting school year ahead of us! Please take a few minutes each week to read the class web site. It will be filled with important information and learning expectations that will be addressed each month. The following links are the curriculum documents for you to have a look at if you wish to know more about the grade one program.
Absences:Please call the school or send a note in the agenda if your child is to be absent. Also please send a note if you are going to pick up your child. If your child does not have a note about a pick up they will be put on the bus.
Running Shoes:All students must have an extra pair of running shoes to be left at school and worn in the classroom.
Lunch and Snacks:Please consider sending drinks and snacks in reusable containers. Please send 2 snacks and the morning snack should be a healthy snack such as fruit, yogurt, cheese etc. This is to help promote healthy eating which is part of our curriculum. As we have life threatening allergies in our school we ask that no hummus, shellfish, nuts or nut products are brought to school.
Agendas:This year the grade one students will receive agendas. The agendas will be kept in a mail bag. Please read and initial the agenda daily and I will do the same. It is a great place to send notes for communication. Please take a few minutes to read the first few pages of the agenda with your child. It contains important and very useful information about the practices at our school. You and your child please sign the proper page that you have read and understand the important information.
Scholastic Book Orders:Book orders will be sent home approximately once a month. If you wish to participate in this program please write a cheque payable to Scholastic Canada Inc. or you may pay by credit card ( following the instructions on the order form, it worked well last year) They have an excellent choice of beginning reading books, a wonderful way to add to your home library. If at any time you would like the books to be kept as a surprise for your child, just write a note that on the book order and I will call you when the books come in.
School Supplies: The following list of suggested supplies for this coming year: box of kleenex gluesticks crayons or twistables or pencil crayons or markers dry erase markers Ziplock bags Head phones- labelled scissors
Extra Clothing: If you would like to send in extra clothes please label and put in a baggie and I will store them.
Phone Calls:I like to keep in touch with parents several times a year by phone just to check in and see how things are going and to give updates from school. This year my planning time will be from 10:45 -12:00. I can call before school or after school. Please jot a note if you have a preference and what phone I should be calling. If you need to call me please call the school at 613-256-3672 and leave a message.
Parent Volunteers:Parent volunteers are most welcome and a great asset to the program. If you can help out for a half day or even a quarter it would be most appreciated. Over the next few weeks schedules will be confirmed and I can send a schedule. I do know that we have French from 10:45 - 12:00 .
I am really looking forward to a wonderful year with your children. Please feel free to drop me a note in the agenda or call the school if you have any questions and or concerns. I believe it is very important to keep open communication between home and school no matter how small the problem.
